Thank you, NCIS fandom

I just thought I'd take a moment and profess my love for the NCIS community. I've been active in different fandoms for more than ten years, and this is by far the one I've felt the most welcoming and lovely.

Me, I started out in the Lois & Clark: The new adventures of Superman fandom. While people there were perfectly nice, I was definitely much younger than the other active fans, and I never posted anything of my own. After that, I joined the Buffy-fandom, where I wrote and posted my first three fics. Got fairly good reviews, but I never became a real part of it.

I wrote two novel sized fanfics for Harry Potter, with great reviews - over 2 100 reviews on ff.net for one of them - and a whole bunch of shorter fics. However, the Harry Potter fandom is huge. Huge. It's the kind where, if you don't post in the right places and know the right people, you don't get noticed at all. The same ten fics within a pairing get recced over and over, and those people are it, and then there was the rest of us. Also, the hateful comments between fans of different ships weren't all that much fun to read - the different shippers got very protective, to the point of angry, about their ships. To top it all of, I was highly disappointed by the last three books.

Still, I loved being active - it's my most active fandom, fanfic-wise, so far.

I wrote a bit for House, but I've lost interest in the fandom with its recent decline in quality (although 'The social contract' was quite good). And like with the HP fandom, there's a lot of hate going around. The House/Wilson shippers vs the House/Cuddy shippers, and then there are the House/Cameron shippers, and it all just seems to be a big war to me a lot of the time. I know that far from everyone is this way, but it subtracted a lot from the enjoyment of the fandom.

Now, I'm in the NCIS fandom - and here I'm writing fic, making icons (I've made over 500 by now), wallpapers, headers, and modding comms ([livejournal.com profile] ncisfanfic and [livejournal.com profile] ncis_slash). I've never before participated in challenges and competitions like I do now - places like [livejournal.com profile] ncis_lims, [livejournal.com profile] ncis_stillness and [livejournal.com profile] ncis_lfws - and I'm enjoying myself so much!

The people are great, so nice, and everyone is just having fun. Sure, there is a little bit of fighting over what the best ship is, but mostly, people play very well together in our NCIS-y little sandbox. Perhaps it's because the show offers so many options - there are so many pairings to chose from (or for that matter, keep it gen), that it's not as rabid. People are most often perfectly nice to each other. Different opinions on episodes and characters don't matter - in the end, we all know we're NCIS fans. :)

So anyway, I just wanted to say thank you to all of you for creating such a lovely fandom.

*hugs*

Behind the cut: I have three headers up at the moment in three separate comms, so I thought I'd post them here, so that I can remember them later :)

Header and icons by me at [livejournal.com profile] ncis_stillness. Wallpaper available here.

Header by me at [livejournal.com profile] ncis_slash.

Header and the Ziva icon by me at [livejournal.com profile] zivacote_stills.

...and a banner :)

I have to agree, this is one of the nicest fandoms. Even if someone doesn't like a particular pairing, those who do don't take it personally. I like that. I've participated in fandoms where you either believe what they believe or you're flamed and hated on and generally made uncomfortable.

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. That's how I felt the House fandom was with the 'wars' especially between "Huddy"-shippers and House/Wilson-shippers. The same thing with HP, although there, it was generally those who loved the last three books, versus those who didn't. Either way, it makes for unpleasant fandoms.

Awww. Love you too.

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* I've never felt so welcome in a fandom, so I figured I should write it down :)

[identity profile] brilliantomega.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This fandom and the Doctor Who fandom have been great to me. :D It's nice to have somewhere to escape to (in my case away from law school.)

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Law for you too? I'm writing my thesis, which is the last term of law school here in Sweden :) ...Although I want to go to med school now instead ^^

[identity profile] brilliantomega.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
We should have a community for law geeks into fandom. We can rant how little time we have for fandom b/c of law. teehee call it fandom_lawgeek :D 1L here in the US, 3 year program.

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-13 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* I think it'd be more about how little time I have for law because of fandom ;p What kind of law do you want to focus on?

[identity profile] brilliantomega.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
International Intellectual Property/Patent and internet law. :D You?

[identity profile] adnamamai.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
Writers like you help keep us happy.

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, thank you :)

[identity profile] xanthelj.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I love your sentiments! I've found NCIS to be so welcoming and un-bonkers compared to the fandom I was last in. It's made a big difference to my writing and my participation in fandom. I just hope it stays that way and a bunch of people who like to throw their weight around don't move into it. Honestly, the fandom police, the "my pairing is better than your pairing", and the cool kids brigade ruin everything they touch, as your previous fandom experience, like mine, seems to bear out.

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
Which was your previous fandom?

And obviously I agree. I think it has a bit to do with the fact that we have so many characters and none of the pairings are really canon, which means there is a bigger possibility for the other ships. On House at the moment, it's all House/Cuddy, which leads to lots of issues of people being angry about it, and people being angry about the others being angry that House/Cuddy is happening, and then everyone's just angry...

Add in the fourteen-or-so year olds who take everything personal (well, to be honest they can probably be any age) and we have a not fun fandom.

Meanwhile, in NCIS, we can take the chemistry Tony and Gibbs have, or the chemistry between Tony and Ziva, and we can make of it what we want. And though there are some who prefer Tiva, I don't see them as anywhere near as rabid as some other shippers in other fandoms.

Yep, let's hope it stays this way :)

[identity profile] xanthelj.livejournal.com 2009-03-14 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
It was SGA. Lovely show. Fabulous actors. Some fantastic fans. And a massive fandom police and a lot of bullies too. I can speak only from my own first hand personal experience though - others might have a very different view of it.

I'm dreading if the Tony/Ziva becomes canon - I've been vocal about not wanting that. Because at the moment it's so great with us being able to ship all our pairings to our heart's content. But as with House/Cuddy and Rodney/Keller, the minute they give us a canon pairing, the fandom seems to become very entrenched and things can get a bit nasty. I hope that doesn't happen because honestly while I don't see Tony/Ziva, I'm happy for others to see it. What I don't want is for it to be canon so that for some sectors of fandom we all *have* to see it, whether we believe it or not.

I've been made to feel very welcome in NCIS and I'm really happy about that.

I second what you say about NCIS and how open it is.

I've never been involved in a fandom war (not at its height) but I know the damage they can cause - including friendships splitting up.

And unlike some other fandoms it's okay in NCIS not to see the main pairing, people don't shoot you down.

It is a truly wonderful fandom.

And with this whole 'spooky' thing we seem to have going on, 5th March I also made a post about how open NCIS is and how we can all play in the same sandbox, etc!!!!!

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
We are highly spooky o.O I hadn't read your entry (have now, though, and am in total agreement ^^).

I haven't been involved in any fandom wars either, but I have watched them (the House/Cuddy vs all others is ongoing), and they are detrimental. I've never understood the point.

So I love the NCIS fandom. Like you say, I can enjoy Gibbs/Tony and you Gibbs/Ducky, and we can both talk and discuss it without throwing flames at each other. It's a great thing :)

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
We certainly are. *Smiles* I'm glad.

Two of the biggest were in Due South fandom (the Ray wars) and SG-1 (Jack/Daniel vs. Jack/Sam). Due South is one of my fandoms and I can tell you folk still walk around on egg shells.

Exactly. We can indeed - and do.

BTW, I friended you, I hope you don't mind.

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely don't mind :) I've friended you back ^^

*heads back to planning the NCIS Awards ^^*

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good :-)

Happy planning!

[identity profile] cyad.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
OMGi you were a FoLC, too? Who...?

And another House fan... OK, just wanted to thank you for inviting me to your ncisaward comm. But... LC, Buffy, House & NCIS fan... feel free to friend me anytime!

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
*g* Yup, a FoLC too :) I suspect I was just 'Cosmic' at the time, but I didn't write any fic at the time - I mostly sat around the board (because there was only one ^^) and the website and was totally awed by all the great fics people were writing ^^ Did you write anything?

Hehe, we seem to share fandoms :) I've friended you ^^

[identity profile] cyad.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! :)

I'm still cyad on Zoom's but it's been a long while since I've commented. I left the other board 2 years and a half ago.

Oh, one of the nice supportive fdkers. :)

And yes, I wrote some stuffs under Cyad but those were the only fics I've ever written in my whole life. LC was the only fandom I felt like writing on and... not really worth the read if you ask me. There's a link to it on my lj pages 'cause some flist asked me to put it there.

That we do. Great fan minds fandom alike! :p

thanks for friending me back. And while I'm at it, welcome to my crazy lj world. Make yourself at home! :)

[identity profile] taylorgibbs.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Are you at the same username for your HP fic? I'd love to read those if you can direct me there.

[identity profile] bananacosmic.livejournal.com 2009-03-19 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
My masterlist of fics (http://bananacosmic.livejournal.com/71521.html) has all my fics, including the HP fandom (though they are linked to my website rather than LJ, because they haven't all been posted to LJ). Hope you enjoy :)
